Introduction to Graphic Novels and to Illustrated Folk and Fairy Tales

Having lots of questions and not many answers can frustrate many people, but it is a good way to learn for yourself.  We will look at graphic novels and fairy tales more closely soon, but for now we want to come up with our own first thougths about them. For your first blog entry you will be taking the tale you have been given and instead of reading it right away, you will be looking at two pictures.  One picture will be from the graphic novel version of the fairy tale and the other will be from an illustrated version found from the non-fiction section from our library.  After looking at these two pictures I want you to take notes about what questions you have about them.
  • Are there any similarities or differences?
  • Look at details like colour, type of drawings (pencil drawings, painted, detailed faces...) layout, background, do the drawings remind you of something you have seen before in other stories?
  • What is your emotional reaction to the pictures? Do they leave you feeling curious, repulsed...?
  • Are there any words that stand out for you in particular (if there are any words)?

Discuss what your thougths are with your group during your first meeting and then write your first blog response.  Make sure your response is in full sentences and is reflective and well written. It should be at least two paragraphs long and include at least one question that you are interested in finding out. Any questions about the assignment please let me know. Enjoy exploring...
